| partners | | We started on the northeast corner of Greens Peak at a big camping area used by mountain bikers at the base of what they call the Candy Mountain Trail. I can't find any information online as to why this is called Candy Mountain, but the mtbr forums refers to Greens Peak as Candy Mountain, and there are numerous tracks that get frequent fat tire use. Apparently they shuttle to the top in vehicles, and then bomb down the mountain on bikes. There are numerous terrain features and structures built for biking enthusiasts.
I believe that the lower portion of this hike is along the Candy Mountain Trail, but about 3/4 mile up you reach a junction where another old road heads down the west slope. I believe that the west descent is actually the Greens Peak Trail, and I don't know where it's bottom terminus is. Perhaps the old FR 8578, or even all the way down to FR 61? In any case, both used to be roads, but the mountain bikers appear to stick to the north and northeast flanks of the mountain. The old west road would be interesting to explore as well. Both roads come together and ascend the final 1/4 mile to the fire lookout and antenna farm.
I saw an interesting memorial/grave site off the trail north of the summit. A quick web search turned up nothing.
The fire tower is one of the nicest I've seen. We were there late in the day so the lookout was not on duty, which is too bad, as I would have liked to ask him/her about the trail, biking use, and the grave. Oh well, next time I guess...
It was cold and windy for our hike with a few bursts of snow flurries along the way. Views included some snow showers in the distance, but fortunately the lightning we had experienced a couple of hours prior was no longer an issue. |
