I started by climbing to the top of a hill with a large flat top. There are one or two small ruins, a large oval of rubble (a fort?) clearly visible on satellite pictures, and a nice collection of petroglyphs.
From this "known site" I headed cross country, down and up small washes heading toward another hill overlooking the lake - this was my planned route to some lakeside dots. A bit of excitement along the way when a rattler woke up right under my feet - my reaction was acrobatic and I ended up on my back but no damage done. As I was going up the ridge I stumbled upon some petroglyphs. I started looking around and found a lot of petroglyphs and they continued to the top of the hill. The top has a great view and plenty of habitation signs (pottery, rubble "walls", and cleared flat areas). The petroglyphs continued all the way along the top. All this was a big surprise to me.
I headed down toward the lake but since I was approaching glyph-overload I shortened the planned loop and cut east on a jeep road, skipping the lake. Even down here though I found some "free range" glyphs and checked out two knolls that were extensively decorated.
I continued down the jeep road but cut off to head toward a ruin and a glyph site I had marked. I couldn't find them! Ran out of luck I guess. Hit the main road just below the lake and followed it back to the car. |
