| no partners | | I've made a lot of trips to this area (more than 4 including recon) but this one probably finished it up for me.
It's a good place that combines a significant petroglyph concentration with a very large habitation site "nearby". As a major culturally significant location it was used to help justify the establishment of Ironwood Forest National Monument. However you'll find very few details on the internet so I don't mention any keywords that give it away to Googlers.
I had some loose ends in mind: I wanted to 1) search below some glyph sites for painted sherds mentioned by Aladdinsane, 2) check out a couple odd things in the satellite view, 3) walk some ridge continuations from the glyphs I hadn't hit before, and 4) get back to the habitation area and look at some interesting spots as viewed by satellite.
Anyway, another nice day down there. I couldn't find any sherds in the areas I searched though I spotted a couple new petroglyphs. The satellite oddities (a big 7/6 and a circle) are clearly modern desert decorations. Walking the basalt ridges and over a summit did not show me any more petroglyphs though I did notice a few man made rock clearings.
More interesting was the habitation site: walls, rooms, terraces, with just a bit of the expected sherds and petroglyphs. This was my second random walk through and I've probably covered only 10-20%. It's a big area that could keep a careful looker busy for days.
It's curious that there isn't much pottery at the big site - I saw more walking across the desert back to the car. |
