| no partners | | A cool enough forecast that I thought I could fit in one more visit to "petroglyph city" SW of Horseshoe Lake. Previous trips found a lot of glyphs particularly on hilltops and so I mapped a few more I hadn't been to (though I was getting to the dregs) and included a loop to the north side of Lime Creek: would that also be interesting country?
Turned out that these smaller hills and ridges south of Lime Creek did have some rock art though none of it was as impressive as the hills further south. I also happened on to an excavated square room near one of the glyph sites - only ruin I saw on this side.
I crossed the dry Lime Creek, scrambled up the bank, crashed through some trees, and immediately saw a decorated boulder...a good sign! But I didn't see any other glyphs on the north side. I looked for a known large ruin on the peninsula overlooking the lake and eventually found it. It's big but mainly a moonscape...walls visible only in a couple places.
I looped back to the south side of Lime Creek and scrambled up the white cliff. I ran across a concentration of pottery sherds along the ridge but otherwise just enjoyed the light breeze and the thought it will soon be too hot for this sort of thing. |
