| no partners | | Two hikes today. One was short (this one) and the other was even shorter.
On the two hikes, I lucked out and found eight items that have to do with surveying, plus a geocache. (I don’t ‘geocache’, but this one was ‘right there’). Some of the ‘finds’ were in great shape, some were vandalized/destroyed, with their ‘remains’ still present, and one was totally gone, with only its location evidenced.
This first hike took me up I-17 to the Black Canyon City TH, where I commenced to travel on the ‘K-Mine Section Segment’ of the BCT’s rather extensive trail system.
(BCT = Black Canyon Natl. Recreation Trail.) I’m not qualified to comment on the BCT trails, due to my very short ‘stint’ on them. I will say they certainly look worthy for future hikes.
The Agua Fria River is ‘right there’, so the surveyors named the benchmark after the river.
Agua Fria benchmark (1924) is literally a foot away from a Maricopa/Yavapai Boundary Marker, which is in the shape of a frustum, and was also set in 1924. It’s Frustum #21, in a series of 31 frustums, and is one of the 6 larger ones spanning the two county’s borders.
Frustum #21’s three bronze plates were in excellent shape, as opposed to frustum #22 (see my next hike) that was all but decapitated.
Both Agua Fria BM Reference Mark disks were found also. Reference Mark #1 was set in a quartz outcrop, which is quite a unique setting.
My hike had great views of the Bradshaw Mountains and also glimpses of the Agua Fria River.
The BCT system is quite expansive, going all the way to the Prescott Valley. I’ll definitely return to explore more of their trails. |
