| no partners | | When I found out we would be attending our niece's wedding in Mission Bay, I put together a trip across the southmost possible paved road across California, CA-80 -- and CA-94, which is the same road, by another number -- which follows a route from the west edge of the Algodones Dunes, sometimes within a literal stones throw of the border fence, all the way to downtown San Diego (where it connects to I-5). I got the idea from rwstorm, and planned to stop at a restaurant I recall him mentioning, as well as the train musuem in Campo.
Somewhat scenic, but mostly slate flat desert. We ran into some construction delays west of Calexico, but other than than that not too many people take the route. Certainly less traffic than I-8. I would not be exaggerating to say there was more Border Patrol traffic than civilian traffic. Arrived in Ocotillo for lunch at the Red Feather Off-Road Market & Cafe, a motocross-themed joint. Friendly service, great burgers and, according to my wife, the best hot dog she ever had. (The food was so good, we made a point to stop there on the way back.)
Got back on I-8 for a bit, as the side road pavement ran out. Exitted a few miles up the hill at In-Ko-Pah Park Rd. where we planned on re-picking up CA-80. Got distracted for about 30 minutes by a stone tower on the side of the road. There's also a stone topiary and various tchotchkes for sale. (I bought a Geronimo "Papers Please!" fridge magnet.) Neat little place. Then it was west on I-80, in much more scenic hills and creek bottoms, and curvier road, to Campo. I knew the train was not running on a week day, but was surprised to find the museum also closed. Bummer. Thought about hitting it on the way back, but after staying up til midnight at the reception, just wanted to get home. |
