| no partners | | Out for the annual Nature Conservancy San Pedro watershed wet/dry mapping. This is my third straight year on the same segment, this time with two new partners: A mother/daughter team from Scottsdale. (Katy, the daughter, is a college sophomore interning with the TNC.) While last year was bone dry for half the length, this year there was water -- through the water level was noticeable down from just three weeks ago ( http://hikearizona.com/photoset=30424 ). Not sure why that happens, as there is no dam upstream where releases might affect flow.
During the 24 hours we were there, we did not see the still marauding black bear and her two cubs, but we did see several deer darting across the road. (First time deer sighting, in Aravaipa, for me.) Also, on one of the roads that crosses the creek, we saw several large frogs/toads, some of whom had somewhat smaller frogs/toads on their back. Looked more like piggybacking than mating, but then I am no amphibian Dr. Ruth. Since we had to make the crossing a half dozen times, we were very careful to avoid any frog squishings.
