Uneventful beginning, trudged through the Dutchman's trail. Began the ascent up Bull Pass at an hour and 45 minutes. A half hour later I found the fairly well defined trail up to the top of Black Top Mesa. When the path transitions to the tan grasses, it slowly disappears.
Wandered up on top for about an hour, including lunch. Searched and searched for Spanish Hieroglyphics, couldn't find a single one, bummer. Pretty good views though.
Headed back, took a hellish path back down till I caught the trail back to Bull Pass, including a viscous attack by a cholla (OK, so I walked right into it ). Headed back towards First Water. Helped two lost groups of hikers get oriented, both had maps, one a GPS too. Pretty sure the one group made it out, don't know about the others who I convinced to follow me for awhile, until I guess they wanted to stop. Hopefully they didn't head back the other direction I warned them against.
Doing this on back to back days with the South Mountain ascent, I'm somewhat beat. |
