Black Top Mesa is a hike I've been considering for a while, especially for an overnighter, and this was going to possibly be my last opportunity before it gets too hot. I got a late start and didn't leave the trailhead until almost 2:30 pm. I got to the top around 5:15 pm. Lugging a full pack and camera stuff up Bull Pass and then up to the top of the mesa was killer, but worth the views. There are some great campsites on top. Not the very top level with all of the prickly pear, but the level below it. Looks like later this week or next weekend there should be a nice wildflower show on top of the mesa. There were several large patches that haven't quite bloomed yet, and it should be quite impressive when they do. As far as wildflowers, I saw nothing else on the hike that impressed me. We were spoiled with last years show. I struggled on the hike back today, as I'm pretty tired from being out and about all week. I love breaks |
