We arrived at the First Water Trailhead at about 10:30 am on Friday, December 26th. From the cars in the parking lot we could tell that there were already several hikers who beat us to the mud march. Heavy rain the previous two days left the trails littered with puddles and run-off. The temperature was chilly enough to force me to keep my jacket on for the duration of the hike. We were surprised at the number of water crossings we encountered. I counted eleven that required some tactical rock-hopping in order to stay dry. There were many other small streams of run-off that I didn't count. Our intent was to reach the top of Black Top Mesa but that eleventh stream's water level was a bit too high for rock-hopping. It was from the run-off out of West Boulder Canyon at the bottom of Parker Pass. We would have to take off our boots for this one so we called it good for the day and turned around there. Just before reaching the stream we passed a group of about five backpackers who had just crossed the stream so rest assured it probably wasn't all that difficult to cross if we had really wanted to. All in all we hiked 7.6 miles from the trailhead to about a mile from the Dutchman Trail #104 junction with the Black Mesa Trail #241. The water was definitely the main event for this hike. But it was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed the adventure. I think we may have made the attempt to the mesa if we didn't have to deal with all the water. It slowed us down a bit. But we'll be back to conquer this one in the future.
