I'm still kicking myself for not stopping to take a photo of a 'street' sign leading to one of the ranches along FR 303, which read 2nd Amendment Drive.
Using Route Manager FS Topo & Satellite maps I planned a route that would bring me up to the summit along the southeastern ridge, but when I was presented a well-beaten cow-path providing a more direct route, who was I to look a gift-horse (cow?) in the mouth?
Ok, so I had to climb through a fence at one point, but I was able to pick up another path on the other side. Eventually the cows decided they had no reason to climb the steep slope to the high-point of Steer Mountain on the northeast end of the summit ridge and I was on my own... for a little while, when I hooked up with a game trail across the slope at an angle to the ridge. Nice!
Once at the ridge, knowing my penchant for taking a different route on return-legs, I took a jaunt up to the peak on the NE end for a look-see. From there I followed the ridge all the way to the summit on the SW end of the ridge. With a relatively wide flat area at the summit it didn't provide one good panorama viewpoint, so I wandered around a bit for both the summit photos and video. It was quite windy so wind-noise pretty much screwed up the audio commentary of the video.
I followed most of the same route back down from the ridge but for the last 2/3's of the hike I took a wide arc to the north so I came back to the trailhead from the northwest.
Only 24 photos so I'll post the full set on HAZ.
