Last year this was one of five summits in close proximity that I hoped to reach in one hike but it was not to be. Not only was the day was ten degrees hotter than expected, the terrain proved to be far more formidable than expected as well, so I was forced to leave this peak for another day.

Well, it's just over 13 months now so today became another day. Since I had already reached the other four peaks last year there was no need to take the longer/steeper approach from farther out Forest Road 342. (Where I stepped out of the Jeep and almost onto a rattlesnake... :o but that was last year.)
So instead of a long hike I chose the more direct route which allowed me to knock out the hike in under 3 hours.

Although FR 342 was quite bad above the Silver King Substation, it took just over 10 minutes from US 60 to where I began the hike. As usual, once I neared my planned TH site I spotted a route which appeared it would provide an easier climb up another peak from a slightly higher elevation so if it worked out, I would cross a saddle onto Peak 5630 and save some climbing.

Ha! So much for less climbing. Instead of a walk from the saddle across to Peak 530, there was a steep drop to a lower elevation than the TH I chose. Which meant more ascent instead of less. While one might say ha, that serves you right! there was a blessing in disguise. By taking a different route I scared up three white-tailed deer that I would encounter not just once near the start, but also right at the end of the hike while I was descending to the originally planned TH.

So by wavering from my plan I received a bonus... the reason why I continue to deviate from my planned routes. BTW, that's deviate as in not departing from a planned course as well as deviate as in nonconformist, eccentric, maverick, individualist.

Anyway, I knocked out an easy peak while scanning a possible route for an upcoming ascent of Kings Crown Peak along with its close neighbors Peak 5128 & Peak 4971.

I'll post 50 of 56 photos here on HAZ, with the full set on my website as usual.

Peak 5630 summit panorama video is here:

I also filmed the ascent with my GoPro 3, which I will post soon. By the looks of it now I will post it in three ~15-minute segments.
