| no partners | | After deciding to continue on to Peak 5798 I took a glance over the low area in between and noticed a number of cow-paths and set out for the most direct route making use of the paths as much as possible.
Once I hit a fence-line it became even better as the cows had beaten a solid path on both sides of the fence. Of course that only lasted until the serious climb began, when the brush got pretty thick. But thankfully a number of intersecting game trails came to the rescue, making the climb somewhat easier, although somewhat still left me with a steep climb on loose ground. But no matter, just one step at-a-time and soon I was at the summit. This would be the only summit of the day that wasn't a wide flat area obstructed by trees so the views were the best of the day.
I descended along almost the same route as the climb but at the first saddle I decided to take a more direct route back to the TH. The first part turned out to be the only less-than-good decision of the day, fighting cat's-claw, holly, prickly-pear and other assorted brush until reaching the flat area again.
Only this time there were no cow-paths... even the cows are smart enough to avoid the manzanita.
So instead of a direct route, I had to backtrack out of manzanita dead-ends but eventually I hit the fence-line that would take me all the way back to the gate at the TH.
Once back at the Jeep I compared what I had accomplished with what I had hoped to accomplish, and saw I had two more easy peaks left in the area. But it would take more slow driving along Forest Roads just to get to the start of each so with a long day planned for Sunday as well (this time up by Roosevelt Dam) I decided to head home.
Again, although I bagged both in one hike, since I posted Peak 5004 & Peak 5798 as separate photosets on my web-site I figured I'd do the same here on HAZ.
