After the rough drive up FR 49 and the Pinyon Mountain hike I decided to wrap up the day with a couple easy climbs of Peak 3940 and this one, Deer Hill being the last.

It was just a short half-mile drive east from FR 49 on FR 341 to FR 3407 for the last few hundred yards. Being that close to the summit, this would be by far the easiest hike of the day, with a climb of maybe a few hundred yards. With that in mind, I saw no need to carry anything more than my camera and GPS. Ha! So much for not needing anything else!
The climb was easy and the views were spectacular, but on the short hike back down I managed to get stuck by a LONG spine of a pin-cushion cactus.
](*,)
Right through my heavy leather boot and into my foot, then breaking off barely an eight-of-an-inch nub sticking out of the boot. Now if I had my multi-tool with me it would have been a matter of a few seconds and I'd be on my way. But of course, not thinking I'd need it all I had was fingernails.
(So much for thinking, huh?) [-X
But then with the dry weather all my fingernails had been broken and trimmed so short I simply couldn't get enough grip to pull the spine out.

I decided to yank my foot out of the boot, hoping either the spine would come along with the foot, or break off flush inside the boot so I could at least walk back to the Jeep. Well it did break off, right where it came out of my foot, so although I could squeeze it out far enough to pull the rest out, the part still in the boot was not flush with the inside. So I stuck my hand inside, hoping to push the spine with the flat of a fingernail far enough until I could grip it on the outside. Only I couldn't get the flat of any fingernail on it so I resorted to pressing against the end of the spine with the end of my index finger while trying to get a grip on the outside. This eventually worked but it left the end of my finger looking like it had been stuck with a pin... which it was of sorts.

Ok, drama over, it's just the last quick descent and it's all good form here back home. Oh wait, I still have three miles of FR49 to deal with. Oh well, at least it's all downhill. I'll make good use of my under-front-bumper camera spotting the hazards along the way.

Driving up Fish Creek Hill I met more than one idiot, driving faster than they should around blind corners... both were from out-of-state so I'd have no confidence they knew the road. From there on down to Apache Junction it was the typical Sunday afternoon slow traffic on 'The Trail'.

Not many photos so I posted them all here on HAZ. The last few photos in the set provide a glimpse of the bad section of FR49.
