| no partners | | I arrived to a packed Trailhead around 7:30a. A nice young lady was kind enough to close her doors and let me squeeze between her vehicle and the next.
"You on Hike Arizona?" she asked. It was Oceanwithin (Kelli) and her friend Ben. They were also day hiking to the orchard and back. Always great to see other HAZ'ers out representing! We exchanged pleasantries and I was on my way thinking I'd run into them again. I never saw them again.
At the 4 mile mark, I came upon a mule with nobody around. No saddle, no reins. I figured it had escaped from the group that was at the Trailhead saddling up when I started. It hiked with me for awhile, then stopped and ate some grass. Ends up it was not theirs, but either "Released by a guy doing the AZT because it was acting up", or "Some guy said, if you can catch it you can have it". Heard both stories talking to hikers on the way up. It was not seen on the way back.
There are still plenty of apples, although some trees have had all the low branches picked clean.
There are still plenty low ones to be found. The ground was littered with 1000's of apples. As with everyone else, the yellows are my favorite. I ate a few, filled my backpack and went to go pick some pears. All the low ones had been picked and the trees were starting get picked over. The ground was covered. The smell of fermented apples, brought back memories of cider mills and cinnamon doughnuts.
Time to eat an apple.... |
