Everyone went to HAZfest but I had to go check out them apples. Jay and I headed out pretty early and the temps were absolutely perfect. Early on we met a father and son backpacking out. They had separated from there boyscout troop the night before. They had hiked in at night and one of their leaders got the bad bad from a rattler. This pair had hiked up to higher ground so they could get a call out. A helicopter came and got the unlucky fellow at some point in the night. About three miles later, we passed the rest of the group-- they seemed very ready to go home.

We came across a couple friendly guys on horseback at Plow Saddle, chatted a bit, and headed on. Before long we came across where the incident happened. It was on the descent down to the ranch. They had obviously made camp alongside the trail and there was an attempt at making a stretcher. The flustered boyscouts also left a bunch of trash which we decided we would take out on our way back. I'm sure their night was awful and LNT was not their first thought in the morning.

We made it down to the ranch. The apples were plentiful and ripe-- though, the green ones were mostly small. A lot of delicious stuff is happening down there. Unfortunately, though its the driest I've ever seen it. The creek is not flowing at all. There are some clear pools so water shouldn't be any real issue.

We wandered the orchard, took a lunch break, chatted with some backpackers coming in from Rogers, and headed back out. We knew it would get a little toasty on the way out. It ended up pretty warm but there was a nice steady breeze.

A perfect day at the ranch :)
