Didn't do much research and relied on Google Maps, which kept leading me into gated communities. Frustrated and with daylight running out, time for plan B. This turned out to be a nice hike though. Not many people at the trailhead when I got there around 5pm. Saw maybe 15-20 people total on the trail.
Did the loop CCW. Made good time up to the saddle. The climb up got my heart going a bit. Nice views at the saddle, but it's too bad there isn't a trail up to any of the little peaks this trail loops around. The sun was setting right as I started down, so I stopped for several minutes and watched the sun disappear behind the White Tanks, and snapped a couple photos. Very peaceful. Only saw a couple people heading down. Wish I had more time today to add on one of the connecting trails. The "Inspiration Viewpoint" sounded tempting... anyone know how much mileage and AEG that would add?
When I got back to the trailhead there were several cops there asking another hiker some questions. One of the cops asked me if I had seen a man hang-gliding. I hadn't seen anything, but apparently a man launched off the McDowells in a hang-glider, and people that saw him thought he had crash landed in the desert. Checked the news later in the night and apparently he had landed fine, and the cops found him at home safe and sound. |
