Haven't hiked Gateway in a while and the threatening rain was the perfect night - only few cars in the parking lot. Sky was mostly clear - few clouds but nothing scary....yet.
After up and over the pass, the light on Thompson Peak of sun setting was phenomenal. Then I saw the wall of the dust storm rolling across South Mountain. Totally surreal to watch a habbob-type storm moving from a distance and from up higher than the Valley.
Got some sprinkles around the last 0.5 mile and then major, gnarly, intense, dark, grey cloud mass came over Drinkwater peak and reminded me of the final scenes of the movie Ghostbusters. Started moving a little faster - while snapping pics left and right. My heart rate was super high from excitement. My baseline personality is risk-averse - so this race to the car was kind of fun! |
