This little trek was our warm-up for the ABC, BCH, CBC Beginners Backpack trip to the Grand Canyon (not beginning backpacking but inTO the Grand Canyon). Almost all of these folks had never been so this was their first taste. Four folks from CBC (CA Bpacking Club - SF) flew in from CA for this event.

We were staying at Mather Campground and from there we loaded up 3 vehicles to head over to catch the shuttle buses to Hermit's Rest. We hiked over to the start/end of Hermit Trail to dip down a bit to catch the side drainage before the rest of the trail continued and veered to the right. The drop down was a little tricky as we made our way down to the drainage where you head back (it's fairly flat though).

Clyde knew a lot of Grand Canyon stuff and as a former teacher, he shared it with the group as he followed the GPS track to the Four Sisters. I had Rxed it thinking it was 3 Sisters but it's actually FOUR. There was some Fall color here and there before we arrived at our destination where we promptly all goofed around the Sisters trying to get that premiere photo op. They aren't easy to photograph really. I was taking my movies as usual though so that you can maybe get a better visual. We think there were more sisters actually so if you go, let me know what you think.

After having as much time as we needed we headed back. Well Clyde put me in the lead :o . I didn't know he was going to do this or I would have paid more attention. He said to turn right at the drainage which I did and proceeded up but this was wrong and even tho we headed up the drainage a little further, this too was wrong so I got my GPS out and we headed back to the main drainage and continued on our merry way. We eventually came to the pour over with nowhere to go but up (to the right). There isn't a path so you more or less meander around obstacles until you can see the trail and then you pop out.

We took in the incredible views :y: before heading back up the Hermit, along the Rim and to the store. Clyde told us about some of what Mary Coulter had built up there. He has very extensive information about her style. We walked thru the House and then loaded up on the bus for our return trip to the Maswick parking lot and then back to camp.

We had dinner at the Market Plaza Cafeteria before returning to camp and enjoying further conversation and a fire before retiring for the rest of our trip. I decided to sleep in Tonto Jr. Well I had plenty of room, two blankets and the sleeping bag for the very cold nite but in the AM my back was killing me so I'll have to figure that one out :-k . Not good to have a sore back before backpacking into the Grand Canyon.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
