The ride up 136th Street to where this hike starts was almost as much fun for the kids as the hike was. The road has several dips that get steeper the farther north you go. I gunned at the top of a few of those hills and it had a roller coaster feeling. I didn't get too crazy, and made sure I only did it when there wasn't another car coming.
The best section of this is the new Coyote Canyon Trail. At the junction with the Granite Mountain Trail, they have a new map taped to the sign that shows some more new trails they've already started to build. Nice to see this area keeps getting more trails built.
The crested saguaro was nice for the kids to see. I liked the little canyon the trail drops into and then comes out in a wash. Just before the end of the loop, we saw a cattle tank with some dirty looking water.
The length of the hike was just about perfect for the kids. Everyone seemed to be surprised we finished in under 2 hours.
On our way back to Mesa, we stopped in Fountain Hills at the Senor Taco and got some lunch, good food there. Very nice Sunday family time. |
