My neighbor Eric has been inspired to do some iconic killer AZ hikes, such as R2R, Humphrey's Peak, and others :wlift: . He was interested in the idea of the Motherlode until I sent him some links of HAZ photosets. After some of the bouldering and minimal route finding (aka, getting off route), the idea of the Motherlode for him was officially put to rest :out: . Last month we talked and I offered to take him up to the Flatiron and he was in. He also brought along his boss Frank, who has been known to run marathons and was also very interested in tackling this adventure.

We started at 6am with our headlamps. We arrived so early that the main parking area was gated off. By the time we parked at the overflow area and walked back to the gate, it was open. Whatever.

by the time we started getting to the vertical section of the trail and huffing a bit more, there was enough daylight to turn off our lamps. once we got some elevation into Siphon Draw (before the slick rock section) we could smell smoke. As we continued to ascend, the haze across the valley was very visible. It started off purplish and the top of it was visible. It always seemed as though we were about to get above it, but we never did. The purple turned to a red and fortunately faded away thanks to the wind.

The repainted blue painted arrows over the white was as prevalent as ever. ](*,) :tt: Eric, as a first timer on a hike like this, said he found them kind of helpful. for me, they were more of a distraction, as they didn't always send you on the best route.

The last vertical climb just before the top was a fun part, both going up and coming down. Once we got up top, we went out to the flatiron and checked out the haze across the valley. the only bad part of this hike was the timing in terms of that. sitting at the end of the flatiron we could see its shadow cast into the valley below that we just hiked up. We couldn't make out our shadows on the tip of that shadow, 2+ miles away :sl: .

After a brief rest, we briefly explored the south edge of the flatiron and made our way up to Peak 5024. It's a bit of a bushwhack, but not too bad. Fortunately, I had the official HAZ route and getting there was not too bad :y: . We spent a little more time checking out the views from there and made our way down, starting at 10am. By this time, the haze was starting to lift.

The hike down was the usual slog, taking your time to avoid falling. However, it was MUCH easier than it was back in April after I had hiked the ridgeline from Carney springs. That minus 7 miles and extra 2K elevation gain makes a big difference. Still, by the time we reached the bottom, all of our 44+ old knees were feeling the burn. At this time, the peak time of day crowd was making its way up, including several groups of teenagers with music playing on their iphone/pods :gun: , a few families with surprisingly young kids : app : , and other interesting sights  . The route on the way down is much easier to find than on the way up, both because you can see it better from above, and you've already hiked it once just a few hours earlier (see previous paragraph on 44+ year old knees :-({|= )

We got back to the trailhead 7 hours after we started, but after the downtime sightseeing at the top, I guestimated our actual hiking time at 6 hours.

And a good time was had by all.
