After driving Apache Trail to the Horse Mesa Dam area where the gate warns you not to go further. We park to begin a hike on the south side of the canyon to find two arches. When we return from that 3 mile hike, we decide to take the back door to the top of Black Cross Butte. It was very windy, but a fun climb to the top. Jerry and John had done this one in the past, but it was a hoot for those of us doing it for the first time. I'm not sure I could have made it without going with someone who had done it before. After reaching the Cross, we return the normal route rather than trying to go back down the steep climb we made on the way up.
