| no partners | | After tweaking my right knee coming down North Mountain on the 14th, and after 72 hours of doing RICE treatments, I decided to venture out on this, Day 5, to build up the leg so I could again do some longer hikes in the foreseeable future. I chose the canal segment running between Central and 7th Street because it is flat with a smooth surface and has an easy, no hassle access from Ruth Ave on the north. I'd learned lessons from hearing about athletes who try to come back too soon from knee injuries and suffering relapses. That said, the hardest thing about this walk was pace. I had to slow down from my usual 2.5 mph and that tried my patience at first. But about a quarter-mile out I got used to it and went with the flow, stopping to photograph an insect and some plants with my macro lens. Although the hike was not much in length, it was long on quality. I enjoyed this beautiful afternoon more than if I were doing it with a healthy leg. When the knee got sore a bit, I would stop and sit with no guilt. Coming back along the canal's north side I ran into a large flock of ring-necked ducks floating as three separate groups with only some intermingling. I counted 131. Only four mallards though, off by themselves. Lots of people out, mostly bikers. |
