| no partners | | I'm not much of an East Ender at South Mountain due to heavy traffic on the trails. But, having never hiked on the DC before, I thought, bikes or no bikes, I'll give it a stab. Starting at Pima Canyon TH, I walked over to the water tank at Ahwatukee, near the junction of S Equestrian Tr and E Kachina Dr, a distance of about 3.7 mi. Then walked back to where I started, getting to my car in twilight. I will say this. It was no fun. Too many bikers, too many times creating space for them or simply stopping, too many times hearing, "on your left." To think what it must be like on a weekend, not here on a Thursday, boggles the mind. It's a mile and a half out before you get away from the housing developments and walk briefly in a true desert setting. But like the Bajada Tr on the other side of the mountain, walking up and down the many ravines becomes monotonous. The only appeal I can see here is in wildflower season. I did run across a very faint petroglyph at N 33.34742, W 112.00488 and took a photo of it. Saw only a jogger and two hikers until I got back near the TH at dusk. About 6, near sunset, coyotes began howling behind me to the W. I was on the phone with MJ at the time discussing supper plans and held the phone up so she could hear the racket. Hope to do the rest of the DC in one or two more outings. Just to say I did it. Wouldn't encourage hikers to do this trail unless they have strong masochistic tendencies. Or a glutton for the rich colors of bikers' attire. |
