About halfway to 7th St, I usually find huge flocks of ducks, then following eastward, there is the beautiful and historic eucalyptus grove near Northern. Today I did a loop going upcanal on the north side, returning to Central on the south. It was part knee rehab, part birding, part photography, all on a nice slightly overcast afternoon. The "duck station" did not disappoint. I counted 154 ring-neckeds, 9 mallards and a cormorant in the area. At the grove I stopped for about 20 minutes trying to photograph three patient cormorants hanging out together on a piece of protruding brush. My kingdom for a better zoom lens. Anyway, quite a few bikers out today, and I had to be wary going down the only pedestrian underpass on this segment at Northern. Those bikers can come upon you quickly. Nearing Central, I was reminded it was almost suppertime as I passed the canal-side restaurant and tavern, the Spoke and Wheel, and caught a pleasant whiff of cooking food. Although this canal passes by the ritzy Arizona Biltmore Hotel and through downtown Scottsdale, I prefer "wilder" segments like this one. Lots to see if you're not in a hurry. |
