The highest peak is on the east side of this little U-shaped range, and it has three summits extending northwest to southeast. Got to the tops of each one and took elevation readings from my GPS, for what it's worth: NW summit 1,888', the middle peak 2,026' and the SE 2,030'. Nice views in all directions. Could see downtown Phoenix off to the SE, though it is about 30 mi distant by street travel. I watched four hot-air balloons lift off from what appeared to be the SW cor of Dixiletta Dr and Lake Pleasant Rd. I believe they were the same ones I've seen aloft on recent hikes in this area. Lots of traffic for such a short trail segment. Counted 16 hikers, several with dogs. I was the only one parked at the 89th Lane circle when I arrived, but notice a half dozen other vehicles on the descent. Hikers may want to consider parking here rather than off High Desert Drive, which is farther away and takes you through the housing development. I prefer this hike over East Wing. The trail is rocky, not so sanitized, and has the feel of a real hike and not so much a suburban one. |
