| partners | | When Randy led us up Newman I kept thinking, this trail is awesome. Too bad it hasn't seen much maintenance in years. So I had planned to bring my hand pruning shears the next time I did the hike.
Denny and I were trying to think of a hike for Sunday AM. 5057? Why not Newman? Denny had said a while back he wanted to hike it.
We got started a little later than planned, but were able to do most of the ascent in the shade of the mountain. I did quite a bit of pruning on the way up which slowed us down. I think I got about a third of trail cleared. Lots more to be done though.
The hike up is work. 1600 ft of gain in a one mile stretch. Very scenic. Denny had to wait for me several times and on the summit as I got carried away trimmimg brush.
By the time we got over to the saddle by South Newman we were behind schedule and it was getting warm. South Newman is a great destination but would have to wait for another day. The vegetation on the descent route has dried out. Glad I decided to wear my gaiters.
Awesome hike again. Thanks Denny! |
