| no partners | | When I lived closer Box Canyon & Los Lomitas were fun/easy afternoon monsoon hikes. Los Lomitas has been getting a bad rap by HAZ members lately. Having only hiked short portions in the middle I headed out to tackle it from square one.
It's beat to a pulp from the eastern trailhead. Most notably by the stable outfit leading horseback rides. Doesn't help being a sandy wash which no one enjoys as a hiking surface. Signage is not maintained and it's difficult to follow. Somehow the park continues to find resources for entire new trails... idiots.
The phoenix.gov provided map for Los Lomitas does not match their text description. The map has it starting at Holbert and uses the feminine "Las". The text says "parking area on the north side, across from Scorpion Gulch" and uses the masculine "Los". To add to the joy in my favorite narrow wash around Piedras the signage is misleading in one area and messed up in another.
I got off trail quite a few times. Aside from the eastern third it was anything but boring. Unfortunately I underestimated the time needed to explore and had to cut it short. A wee bit more tiring than anticipated too.
Several of the restrooms have been refurbished. I noticed the Kiwanis one getting some love over the winter. Surprisingly they renewed others too. Unfortunately it's slightly pointless as they're all locked up. Maybe open for special events?
On the brightside I think I get what the "Hideout" is/was. Made it to Las Lomitas ramada for the first time. Large, old but not destroyed. The road is locked off but one of the larger parking areas looks modern.
I'll have to come back. Wearing sandals my feet and legs were filthy. |
