Most times you get the best views early in the morning but today I think a later start might have been better as there was a pretty good layer of clouds out when I started my hike around 7:30. On the plus side this made the hike up a little easier to deal with given the heavy sun exposure the last half of the trail receives. Even though there weren't blue skies awaiting at the top, the views were still great. You could see Mt. Adams as well as Mt. St Helens. Saw less than 15 people out on the trail, so this trail keeps its reputation as one of the least traveled in the park. Hard to believe considering the great views it provides. Heard from one party that some other hikers saw a black bear cub and so they decided to turn around. No such luck for me. I had hoped to see some elk in the upper meadows but today was a wash-out for wildlife. Still, a day in the park is better than any day in the office!
