The stormy blustery morning gave great sunrise. I was on my way to hike Keilberg Canyon of the Galiuros from the West side. I knew of one road but wanted another one. Nothing doing, everything locked up. Back up the one road I knew. As I tooled along I took a sideroad thinking it might get me over to the road I wanted. It got me to a great overlook looking down at a canyon dropping down and bordered by towering and fluted mudstone cliffs.
The diffused light made it all the more enchanting. I was going elsewhere. But then a large jack rabbit darted down the canyon, moments later a long legged coyote loped after it. I decided that was a sign.
I grabbed my pack and camera and took off. Located a cattle trail down then to the rim of a 30 foot pour off. Route around then down. Some flowers were holding forth in spots by the cliffs. I walked down the wash, just to check out the main wash. The main wash was Keilberg Canyon, just in the foothills.
I looked upcanyon and saw a dark slit. Okay, have to check that out. I was entranced by the greenery, the wonderful light, the saquaros, and just walking. Just beautiful. The shattered rock of the slot was very attractive. The little slot canyon was fun, full of colorful rocks and white flowers, and some class 4 scrambling at a twelve foot and a 20 foot dry falls. There was a small pool and lots of bees at the foot of one. I had to build a rock bollard to get up the slick rock of the first one, then some fancy footwork for the second, handholds including the base of a small bush.
I spent some time here, decided when the slot became shallow to get on top to get some photos. This wasn't easy due to loose rock and lots of cactus.
I walked on top out onto a narrow point, the walls fell away over 100 feet. Some colorful ocotillo here. I found an animal route down and took that. A side canyon called to me. Up here I found more fluted walls, some so straight it seemed not natural. I rested in the shade, I had forgot my hat and was low on water. I wrapped my white shirt around my head then trekked on.
I walked downcanyon a little to check out a separate tower and more huge mud flow walls.
I headed back to the Jeep. It seemed that didn't take long. It was almost 4:00pm!!! So I didn't get on up the road much, and because of the wind decided not to camp out but return home.
What a nice day. Totally unexpected. |
