This was an exploratory hike in case I lose all sanity and do my Pikes Peak pumpkin loop again. I made it to the Barr trail via Heizer and 703. However, when I got to the 703 there were two options to the Barr trail 703 and 638. I have to look because I believe I've seen a sign for 638 below Barr Camp. 703 I would have never found during the loop because it connects to the Fremont forest experimentation station 4 miles below Barr Camp.and is not signed. Although doable probably the 638 would save 4 miles. 703 was a good choice because I decided to do the Manitou Incline since I was already there. This added 4.5 miles so it's about 7.5 miles one way from my house to the Barr trail. Anyway, manitou incline was closed for several months for repairs and improvements. No railroad stakes and rebar to kill you or impale you if you step wrong.
I took my time as I was running low on water and had a long way to go. The only navigational issue is when the 703 crosses the south fork of French creek. To the left there is what appears to be a trail straight up. It's rather steep and I fell for it. I crossed the stream at the sand bar getting my huaraches wet, but on the way back I was able to cross farther down stream. The 703 is not used very much and is faint in places, but was easy to follow. I suspect the 638 is in better shape and used more because I think it goes past the manitou reservoir. Another hike for another day.
My wife called and was running late so I met her after the hike and she saved me two miles of road walking. |
