Hearty campfire food set me up for the day ahead, and we casually began our hike mid-morning with a college buddy from Tucson. A warmup through saguaro lined washes in the desert gave way to progressive incline as we tackled the monument that had towered over us the previous night. The cables required all four limbs and spiced up the hike. Planked cages alongside the steeper sections weren't for the weary of height. We finally landed at the peak and spent some time soaking in the surrounding territory. It was both isolated but surrounded, with I-10 traffic and the rail line just below, but seen seemingly endless in both directions. Just watched the trains roll past for a bit. We were joined by a rock squirrel for lunch before we descended.
First chuckwalla siting - it was a biggie too. Nate had fun interacting with him, and we also got to see our first chuckwalla in defensive poses too:)
Nothing like finishing off the hike with the nearby DQ |
