| partners | | Since I needed flat things to do due to my surgery this month, I decided that it was a good time to explore a very interesting mine. Be aware exploring mines is a very dangerous thing to do. Anyway...
The Hilltop Mine began in the 1890s. In 1917, a tunnel was dug completely through a mountain. Hilltop had a school and the miners would take their children through the mine to the school. I wonder if they got to ride in ore cars? Nowadays, access to Hilltop is limited. Part of it is on private land. The part that isn't has had accessed blocked by private land with locked gates. So getting to the area you have to be a little creative! Also only part of the tunnel is now accessible as a cave in did occur blocking the way through to the other side.
Mike and I explored the mine. In my photos you can use him for scale, keeping in mind he is freakishly tall. |
