I drove over to Ajo Friday and spent the night at a motel before meeting up with the others at the monument Saturday morning for the camping part of the trip. In all my previous visits to Organ Pipe the only hike I ever did was the Bull Pasture/Estes Canyon/Mt. Ajo one (this was also the first time I ever camped there). I didn't have any problems after doing Wasson Peak the week before, so I figured I would be alright on this one. It was pretty short, but I didn't bargain on it being like a mini-Flatiron! That's why I stopped up by the saddle above the arch. My knees were shot at that point, and though it was only about another 200 foot down climb to the arch, I decided to stop there while the others went on.
It's actually is a cool little hike, but the knee issues make going back down this kind of stuff really tough for me these days. Lots of pain and very slow going, but of course as long as there is cold beer waiting in my ice chest, I will always get the job done!
My only regret was not taking my trekking poles! |
