Hank and Larry's recent camping trip to the Aztec Peak area fired me up to return and look for a few things I hadn't seen in some time up by Peterson Ranch. Although it was just for one night, I will be going back up there again soon. Such a beautiful area. On the way up stopped in Globe for lunch at the reopened El Rey Cafe (glad they ditched the buttered tortillas and chips ;) ). Then stopped at Fry's for beer and ice, plus Subway to get a footlong Italian BMT, which would serve as my dinner and lunch the next day). :D

The drive up past Roosevelt Lake was especially spectacular with yellow everywhere as the Palo Verde were in full bloom. :) The pull up into the mountains to the Workman Creek turnoff is one of my favorites with dramatic views in every direction. I will never tire of it! And of course the drive up along Workman Creek to the falls and beyond is a classic by itself. There wasn't much going on at the Elk's Youth Camp Friday afternoon when I drove up, but Saturday when I left, the Boy Scouts had arrived and it was a sea of tents!

My favorite camp spot above the falls was taken and there was a group of hunters set up at the larger area further up, but a nice spot near there on the south side of the road was mine for the taking. :D Good view of the sky too. Mars is really rocking the late night and early morning sky right now...wow!

I enjoyed the pleasant mild evening (overnight low temp was 51 degrees) and slept well. Hung out around camp much of the morning enjoying the calm conditions and coffee (plus wandering around a little). Lots of action on the road, with jeeps and ATVs galore. Sure isn't like it used to be up there!

After packing up it was over to the Peterson Meadow area to look around, etc. before heading home. By afternoon, the wind was increasing along with cloud buildups, as a surge of moisture from the Gulf of California was temporarily moving through (in fact I missed a brief .02 inch rain shower at my place in Tucson while away). Actually hit a few sprinkles around Oracle on my way back. :)
