Slept real good...then up early for photos & coffee. A perfect desert morning it was. Took our time breaking down camp and fine tuning our plans for the day. For me, though I wanted to join the rest for the hike to Bull Pasture or Mt. Ajo, I was pretty sure my knees were not going to allow this. So, Angela was off to hike to Victoria Mine from the campground (killing some time before driving over to hike to Bull Pasture to meet the others coming down from Mt. Ajo), while I decided to slowly drive over to the Bull Pasture/Estes Canyon TH, stopping for photos, then waiting there for Angela to show up. That worked out pretty well and after some time relaxing at the TH, wild woman Angela zoomed in.
I told her that after hanging out there for about 40 minutes and having a cold one, I was going to try to hike with her. Well, that didn't last long, as any down or up step caused sharp pains in both knees. No new injuries, just wiped out from the hike the day before. This would settle down with time I knew (like about 5 days later), but by the time we reached the trail junction a short distance from the TH, I threw in the towel. We said our goodbyes, then she was off to Bull Pasture and I started the drive home.
By this time I was really hungry and stopped at Grannymac's Cafe in Why (which is curiously closed on Saturdays). Place was hopping, as Sunday is a busy day there from what I was told. Had an excellent red chili burro and bean tostada! The crew was really slammed with work at that time, so I gave a generous tip in appreciation of the efforts. I mean, they were busting it!
This was a really fun three days out in the Ajo/Organ Pipe area. For some reason, I don't go out there very often, but it certainly is a worthwhile destination. It was good to see Angela and Kelly again. Finally got to meet Karl and Kathy, who know a lot of the same folks I do from down Tucson way (and it was a blast talking with Karl about SAHC). I had not actually met Amy before, but I think she was on a Take a Hike Flatiron hike that I did back in December 2010.
Again, good times with fun folks in a great place! |
