The drive to the trailhead is through the Ancient Bristlecone Forest about 22 miles with 10 on dirt but very cool scenery along the way. The trailhead is at about 11,800 so relatively high elevation start. The hike is also one of the easiest 14er's being an old road the entire 7.5 miles to the summit. Regardless it's still at elevation and the snow made it a bit more challenging.
On the hike we passed the Barcroft Research Station about 2 miles in. After that there is another 3 miles of relatively flat hiking which took us up to the steepest elevation and switchbacks. Definitely took longer to do the last 2.5 miles to the summit than the rest of the mileage. The winds also kept getting stronger throughout the day and by the time we reached the summit winds were probably 40 or 50 miles per hour and temp of about 40 degrees while it was 115 in Phx..amazing extremes! With the intense winds on the summit we didn't stay long but there was a weather station structure on top that provided somewhat of a wind break. There were 3 others on the summit and we saw about fifteen people on the trail along the way and several marmots |
