Flam is the epicenter of what Rick Steves and other travel authors call "Norway in a Nutshell", which is touristy loop east of Bergen through two fjords, a private scenic train, a bus ride, and another scenic train across the Hardangervidda Plateau. The idea is to experience a variety of things Norwegian in a single day, and it would do a pretty good job of that if you had limited time in Norway. The private scenic train is called the Flambana, and goes N/S through an ancient valley cut out by eons of glaciers.
At the southern end of the Flambana is Myrdal (which is one of the connecting points for trains from Oslo and Bergen), and nearly there is a train stop called Blomheller Station which is about 1/4 from the southernmost point that one can drive on the road, and is thus the trailhead, Note, there are train stops closer to Kjosfossen, one of which provides a short view up the waterfall. Getting to Blomkeller involves driving 9+ miles south from Flam on a mostly good, one-lane road with nail-biting switchbacks and intermittent turnouts for meeting cars.
The hike up the rest of the valley to Myrdal is fantastic and culminates with a series of switchbacks along the Myrdalfossen. I saw only a handful of people until reaching the Vatnahalsen Hotel, where there were a few people milling around, seemingly waiting around for the next train. See my pictures for a better understanding of the area around Mrydal and Kjosfossen. As you can see from my track, I had to hunt around for ways to reach the waterfall. Seeing (and feeling) the water thundering the mountain from the lake (Reinungavatnet) is something to behold. The rain on the way back did little to take the edge off seeing this magnificent waterfall. Outstanding hike.
Sorry for the length of this triplog but I'm waiting for the wifi to come back up and just finishing up my second cup of coffee. |
