It's been a year since the last recorded death when an Australian student fell to her death off Trolltunga. After see the hoard of people waiting to get on the "tongue" and have their picture taken in a weird and unusual pose, I can only say that it's surprising that it doesn't happen more often. Despite the danger of reaching the tongue and hopping around on the end of rock that looks ready to let loose at any time, this is a classic Norwegian hike that is known and respected around the world. It is listed as one of the top ten views in Norway, and once you see it, it's easy to see why. Incredible rock above a beautiful fjord. The only problems are that it's a hard 14 miles RT and you're lucky to find a space in the huge parking lot at the TH. I got one of the last few spaces left, admittedly after a relatively late 10:15 a.m. start, since we drove from Flam. But, I can't imagine what it's like during the summer.

The hike starts with a quad burning, stairmaster climb (knee killer on the way down) of about 1000 feet. Once you reach the ridge, the route is up another 1200+ feet, and up and down along the ridge past lots of small lakes and nice rock, accumulating 4000+ feet of aeg along the way. The route is marked with interesting signage along the way. Each kilometer of progress is marked with a sign which details how far you have come, and how far it is back to the TH. At the 3 or 4 km sign, there is a warning that (I'm paraphrasing) "if it is after 1300, turn around and go back". Luckily I arrived there at 12:30 p.m. (also the days are a lot longer this time of year), so I went ahead but didn't get back to the TH till after 6:30 p.m. After seeing the sign, I checked the batteries in my headlamp.

A lot of people doing this hike stay in Odda, which is a few miles to the south of Tyssedal, and take a shuttle to the TH. Take extra food and water, because this hike will take longer than you expect.

This is a fantastic hike. If you're up for a strong day (and the company of a few international friends, judging by the overheard conversations), and in the area, do it. Unforgetable experience.
