At last Sweat Peak is bagged and checked off the list! :y:
I've had my eye on this random little prominent peak for awhile now and today was the day!
Started my hike in the middle of the day like I weirdo only because I knew there would be some great cloud cover in the late afternoon if the forecast was correct (which it was), I just knew the first hour of my trek would be sunny and warm.
My first 2 mikes were hot and shadless like expected with temps in the mid nineties with direct sunlight so when I finally hit Sweat Spring it was like reaching a true desert oasis!
An active windmill powering the secluded spring gives life to wildlife and cattle for miles!
Today on this hot afternoon I was the animal benefiting from the spring, I eagerly splashed my face with cool clean water, dunked my hat in a puddle and filled up one of my waterbottles just in case I needed the extra water. I sat underneath the shade of the trees in the riparian area around spring and relaxed for a moment before I began my ascent.
Since the spring provides so much life there were some excellent burro paths leading to the base of Sweat Peak, from there I just made my way up the Northeastern side of the mountain and unfortunately still had no cloud cover, I was a bit early.
About 1/4 of a mile out from the summit is when Sweat Peak earns its name, it makes you work the remaining way up with steep slopes and plently of buckhorn cholla and other obstructions in the path the remaining way up.
The summit was just as I expected clean, pristine and offered downright phenomenal views! 8)
There was however a unexpected find, it was a large metal plaque dedicated to "Jennings Bryan Sweat"! Could the peak, spring and nearby sweat canyon all be named after him? He was born in 1897 and passed in 1984, not sure when this area was surveyed and named but I would assume it has to be a reason behind it.
Once on the summit the clouds and wind rolled in the conditions were perfect! I could see a few boats zooming around on Lake Pleasant as they got closer to the the Agua Fria River, maybe one day I'll bring my packraft and descend down the backside of SP and create some
sort of hiking/rafting combo trips that I was rather fond of a couple years ago!
I quickly made my way down and back to my SUV with the some Jr Bacon cheeseburgers and curly fries from Jack in the Box on my mind.
Great little hike and rewarding desert peak, just don't forget your SLT permit!

Nice spring with slow flowing water powered by an active windmill. Water was clear and fresh, a true desert treasure!
