Arrived at the campground late afternoon and had the place all to myself. Set up the tent, relaxed a bit, then looked around for some firewood as the daylight faded. It appeared that a comfortable quiet night was in store, which for the most part it was. :D

After a couple of brews while sitting around the fire, I decided to walk back to near the campground entrance, where there is a good view of the sky. This was shortly before 8:30. I was standing there in the dark looking at the sky when I heard a faint call behind me. It almost sounded like a bird. So I turned on the light to see what it was, and to my surprise there were 4 pairs of yellowish eyes reflecting back! :o Whoa! My first thought was cats, perhaps 50 to 70 feet away. One of them started toward me, and at that point I said loudly, "Hey! You guys need to go now! Go!!" Movement toward me stopped, and I slowly retreated back to my camp spot with the light on them. My mind was racing by this time. What the heck do I do, leave camp, try to sleep in the RAV? :scared: High anxiety had set in! As soon as I yelled at them, they started making louder, different vocalizations, sort of like high pitched squeaks or yelps. At this point I figured it was a mama lion out roaming around with her cubs (I never could get a clear look at them, but one seemed a little larger).

This is what I heard first
And this is what I heard next

I moved my chair next to the vehicle in case I need to get in quick, got my camera and set it to flash mode and full zoom. When I would hear one of the yelps I took a shot in that direction. This went on for several minutes and I could hear them working their way to the creek, fortunately not too close. I actually went in the vehicle briefly and flashed the headlights hoping to see something, but didn't. I was lucky enough to capture one up on the road above the campground, before they headed down toward the creek. By this time I was calming down, and their calls were getting fainter as they headed up the hill. I only heard a growl or snarl once, and I figured it was a couple of the cubs playing as they went up the hill. Phew! [exhale]

The grand excitement over, I settled back to the beer and fire to ponder what had just transpired. Did that really happen? Wow!

Calm returns

After awhile it was time for sleep, but I did take a nice chunk of firewood into the tent with me just in case. ;)

Holy :pk: that was friggin awesome!! :y:

Since I never got a good look at the critters, when I got home I searched YouTube for videos on bobcat and mountain lion sounds. That pretty much iced my initial conclusion of puma.

Campground walkabout

I have had some amazing adventures in that campground over the years. It was the very first place I ever pitched a tent and car camped, way back in October 1983. Many campouts, both rowdy and tame, with many folks or just me, took place in both the present day part and the abandoned section. I met my only fiancee-to-be on a singles trip here in September 1997; saw a dog on that trip get nailed right in the face by a skunk (that was a fun cleanup session); and had a memorable encounter back in the abandoned part with 3 mountain lion cubs cavorting in the full moonlight in August 1986!

Yes, it is almost impossible to believe, but I now have had two multiple mountain lion encounters in that campground, 30 years apart! Very, very special, especially for just an occasional visitor. :thanx:

May the adventures continue! (raise a toast) :GB:
