But just going to the crack wasn't going to be enough for the day for us that's for sure. I was able to find a little info about Long Canyon and talked Jake into checking it out with me. After getting to the crack and seeing this nice little gem we stopped for a few minutes and Jake put his fishing pole into the water and after just a few casts he was able to catch a whopper. Okay it was just a 3 inch bass but still pretty impressive to actually catch one in such a short amount of time. After our fishing break we started to head on up the other side of the Bell trail to reach our approach for Long Canyon. Now it wasn't the best approach i've ever taken but it worked and up and over the ridge we went and made our way down to the canyon. Immediately we were in some pretty impressive sandstone narrows and we were both surprised and pleased with what we were seeing in this canyon. Feeling a little warm and overheated, the first pool we encountered was a welcomed sight. I thought it was going to be just waist or chest high so in I went first walking with my pack above my head. Just as soon as Jake asked me if it was all chest high and I was about to answer yes, the next step I took put me underwater. A few seconds later when I came back above water I could only hear Jake laughing. Yeah guess who's going first in the next pool we come across. The water felt nice on the warm day though so I didn't mind taking any plunge. The canyon continued on in narrow fashion with a few more pools to cross. We came across only one drop that needed to be rappelled about 15 to 20 feet into a nice shallow chamber of water. The canyon was healthy with vegetation and some beautiful sandstone formations the entire time. We made out way back to Wet Beaver Creek and enjoyed the crack area once more for a few minutes before heading back. Nice area and nice trail, hard to believe it took me this long to get there. |
