| no partners | | This was our second foray into the area NW of Table Mountain/Pima Saddle (see Leviathan via Alamo Canyon) before the Bighorn restrictions set in. Last week was just exploration, but now we've sort of formulated a plan to try what we are calling the Pima Saddle Traverse. That means starting somewhere on the NW side, either Rams Field or Catalina Park and intersecting the Pima Canyon Trail over one of the saddles along Pusch Ridge between Table and the Pima Saddle (see my pictures for a graphic). Today's outing was to see how difficult Dead Horse Canyon was. We started at the Rams Field Pass subdivision and proceeded up the well used canyon, cut more SE to intersect the canyon and hit the canyon. There is a faint trail for quite a ways, passing several beautiful pour-offs. I think Fish and Game has used this canyon to get to some predefined viewpoints to observe the sheep population, because past a prominent junction of drainages, there is NO sign of use or cairns, and there is no reason why this point is a destination.
We pretty much fought our way through the brush for another mile or so, then decided we had had enough. I would not recommend the route we took to get out of the canyon to the north. Steep, poor footing, iffy scrambling along crumbly and loose boulders. Once on the ridge, we bagged two small peaks on the way back (one being the one fricknaley inquired about last week, unk 4262).
The aeg looks pretty puny but, with the scrambling, it was a hard day for us. To make things worse, Frank picked up a thorn through his leather Lowas and had to have it cut out. Don't know yet but this may can our planned Pima Saddle Traverse till after May 1st. |
