So, we gave it our first exploratory last Friday from the trail head at the locked gate on Tom Rhodes Ranch Road. The start was along the road down to the ranch, then along the north side of the ranch to connect to what appears to be Schoenholzer Canyon. Once we got into the canyon (directly east of the ranch house), the going was so nice for a mile or that we stayed in it. This turned out to be a mistake because we suddenly reached a pouroff (which required a risky climb around) and very steep terrain with loose rock and soil. We made it up to about 5630 feet after a scree field I wouldn't wish on anyone, and had lunch. We assessed our situation, and facing another 1500 feet of very difficult elevation to reach the West Divide Trail, decided to call it a day. We have another approach further to the south picked out that may be possible. We'll start earlier because it will be long day. That was a very tiring 2240 feet of elevation.
I've also posted the drive in from the DMV in San Manual. Very good 4WD road to the locked gate on the ranch road. They have no problem with hikers or hunters, just ask that you sign in and carry out all trash. Beautiful country and there are some other hiking options in the area. One I remember was posted by Cannondalekid.
There is a good bit of water at several spots along the way. |
