For those that have been following our probes of Alamo Canyon, with the intent to cross over Pusch Ridge above Pima Spring and leave via Pima Canyon, this is another piece of the puzzle. Frank and I completed several recons up Alamo Cyn from Catalina SP, but never completed the crossing. Matt and I did this hike because I wanted to see what the terrain looked like down Alamo Cyn from the saddle (rough and steep, but with lots of small trees) and to see if dropping down to the Pima Cyn trail from the saddle was reasonably possible (it is).
I couldn't see the terminal point of our Dec 16 attempt (where we cliffed out), but could easily see where we decided to turn around on the Dec 30, wet canyon, attempt. All in all, I think the first crossing should be from Pima to Alamo, using ropes to rappel down the very steep, tree filled top part of the canyon. Because of the sheep restrictions, we won't get back to this project till next fall. Watch this space for future updates.
I kick myself for not climbing up to the peak to the west of the saddle. Realized after seeing my track on HAZ that it was only another couple hundred feet and the views of Table Tooth (another short lister) and Table Mtn. would have been worth it.
Pima Canyon trail is in excellent shape; someone had been trimming recently. Met lots of people on the lower trail looking for the "waterfall". We assumed that the resorts have been telling people (and exaggerating) about the small waterfall at the 2nd dam. Go figure. There is a small flow over the third dam and good supply at the Pima Spring. |
