I had passed by the gate to this area of AZ State Trust Land area so many times on the way to Hewitt Road and kept telling myself "some day I'll check it out" and today just happened to be that some day. And, just as it had been every time I thought of driving through the gate, there was a mud-hole there.

Oh well, a little mud won't stop me. After a little trouble opening the gate without falling into the mud-hole and I started to drive through. It didn't look like much I was still in two-wheel drive. And whoa! This mud-hole is DEEP!

The rear wheels were turning but the Jeep stopped dead in the center of the mud-hole. I hit the brakes, popped it into 4WD and tried again. But I still had wheel spin so I hit the front and rear lockers and hit the gas... and SLOWLY came out the other side, throwing mud up on the hood and roof. Well, I guess I'm not going back through that gate again.
(Thankfully during the hike I found a way to get out another way.)

Ok, finally, time for the hike.

Rather than just an aimless wandering, I felt a destination of some kind was in order so Peak 2489, which I had first visited over 50 months ago would be a worthy mid-point.

But this time, instead of approaching directly from the south as I did before, I followed a wide clockwise loop from the east, beginning by heading southwest, west, north along the ridge to the summit, and finally east back to the Jeep.

This hike was also an excuse to try out my new Merrell Moab Mid Waterproof boots on some very rough and rocky terrain. Yes, they worked out very well. They have a sightly harder sole than my Red Head Traiblazer boots so they won't wear quite as fast, the flip-side being a little less grip on smoother surfaces, but they'll do.
