Knowing she wouldn't be too keen on being in the Jeep on some of the STEEP hills we'd have to drive up-and-down, I tried a different route I had mapped out 3 years ago. Well, it turned out between natural and man-made erosion (from tons of ATV/4x4 traffic) over that period, the inclines offered noting but anxiety for Tracey. After the first scary one, Tracey said if we encountered more like it, she'd get out and hike up or down while I drove them. But when we came to the next one I didn't stop to let her out and just kept going, and pretty much from then on she just kept her eyes closed.
After all the drama of the drive, the hike had little drama to offer. We took a wider loop than I did previously, trying to stay as close to the Salt River for as long as possible, which meant we crossed quite a few drainages along the way.
While Tracey hoped to catch a glimpse of some bighorn sheep, none were to be found today.
But no matter, Tracey's eagle-eye for pottery came through to add a little excitement to the hike. After spotting one tiny potsherd, we set off on a quest to see how many we could find. Within a 100' radius we came up with about fifty potsherds, possibly a few arrowheads and what looked like half of a mano. Well worth the trip out.
But now we have the return drive yet to do... Since she didn't like the route on the way to the hike, I decided to take the route I used three days ago, with the only trouble being, I no longer had the route on my GPS. And with just about every ridge and wash looking the same, it took a few back-tracks to make it back to the gate at Butcher Jones. And yes, Tracey had her eyes closed even more often.
Oh yeah... again we skipped the side-trip to the AZNG mascot. |
