Tug and I looked at the map and decided to start from a more remote TH so as to avoid the crazy crowds at the Pinkham Notch visitor's center parking lot. Little did we know, we had picked the absolute STEEPEST route up this crazy mountain! Most people do it in reverse and do a car shuttle. We did an out and back since Tug can't drive. PERFECT! Man, was that an ass-kicker trail up!!!! Pretty much almost all of the gain was in that first few miles of the hike - over 1000' per mile!!! There were some 'stairs' that I wasn't sure how Tug would do on, but he was WAAAAY ahead of me, and totally showed me up on them. The way down was going to be interesting, with their depth perception being out of whack. Looking through those stairs going down is frightening to a human, let alone a dog. Once again, he proved me wrong. He was a champ, and I swear the dog would have done the hike again if I physically could've. But I was spent!
If I can figure out how to post a video on here, I'll get the one on Tug going down the steps - it's super cute!
These 3 like to get done at once, because there's not very good views, with the exception of the first peak, Wiley. There's one outlook, and you get great views of Webster, Jackson and Pierce. But the rest of the time, for the most part, you're in the woods. |
