Got an early start and hit the trail just as the sun was coming up. We were all in great spirits as we made the relatively flat trek in down Second Water. We were treated to some amazing views; the recent rains brought out the greenery and filled the small creeks with a steady flow of water that looked amazing as the sun crept over the mountains and started to hit. Getting to the intersection of Second Water and Boulder Creek we took a quick snack break before started up Boulder Creek toward the southern base of Battleship.
The creek was flowing pretty well from the recent rain which made moving up it all the more challenging albeit incredibly fun as we attempted to pick our best route. Unfortunately not all of us were able to stay dry as Mark quickly dunked an ankle We crossed the creek a few times and made a few scrambles as we bounced on and off the trail before finally landing at a cairn that would mark our steep scramble up to the base of Battleship.
We grinded up pretty quickly and took a few minutes to admire the cave at the base before continue on up. The first section of class 3 was exciting once we figured out the correct way to go, the rock was covered in an amazing array of colored lichen that was so vibrant with interesting shades of neon green and blue. Getting past the first scramble and making it to the top was incredible! Great views of Weevers and La Barge and Canyon Lake and even back west to the valley. But there was plenty more to see so we pushed on. We made our way down the ridge past a variety of easy class 3 scrambles and some very minor exposure, definitely not as exposed as I thought in parts as we moved over our obstacles really quickly. Route finding was minimal as things were pretty clearly marked although we did backtrack slightly a couple times.
Finally peaking out was a feeling of great success with a lot to explored at the top. Very open with a variety of vantage points and things to see. We signed in and had a quick lunch before heading back down the way we came. A really great day over all with some old and new friends plus some pretty interesting trail talk... |
