Perhaps plans were a little overly ambitious , thought I would do the Boulder Canyon loop from First Water and add Battleship summit and Aylors Arch to the route, only making one out of two was still quite a workout.
Sun was up at the start a little after 8, took Second Water trail to Boulder Canyon. It was surprisingly warm already going south in the canyon as there was no breeze present. Noted a trickle of water from
second Water Spring, no pools noted in Boulder Creek. Took what appeared to be the most used cairned route up to the stern of the ship. After the first scramble dropped off a bottle of power ade to lessen the weight the remainder of the way up. On the way up the first peak I was overtaken by 2 other hikers , recent college grads waiting to start grad school very friendly and loquacious. None of us had been to the summit before so it was good to have some team work to complete the "tricky " part of the route. The views and having company made me linger longer than planned at the top, maybe procrastinated about the return trip.I thought the views from here of Canyon Lake were worthy of painting just need to haul an easel up there, maybe an American flag too, about time to paint mark the route also. Finally time to leave, couple of minor sliding episodes and I'm back to retrieve my power ade bottle. Returned to where I came up from Boulder Creek after a short ways down angled toward the Calvary trail junction to return to Boulder Creek. Heading south towards Aylors Arch again warmer here as wind was blocked. Above the Calvary trail junction had my only wildlife encounter which was with a skunk, we both rapidly headed in opposite directions . I was now recalling why I rarely hike this trail as the canyon walls are scenic but too many boulders to step on with the crossings. Intersected with Lost Dutchman and heading directly toward the low saddle to start up to Aylors Arch , my phone battery was now 18%,so turned it off for awhile, if I went on I'd be overdue for my estimated return time, and ok I was tired and already had too much fun today so headed back to First Water, nice day on the trails. |
